City Place 1 & 2
After the loss of manufacturing in downtown Hartford by the 1970s, planners and developers looked to financial and insurance companies to keep jobs in the city. Construction of high rise office towers continued at a rapid pace.
The City Place complex boasts Connecticut’s tallest building. City Place 1, built in 1983, has 39 stories and rises to 535 feet. It mainly houses corporate offices. City Place 2 is a companion building, constructed in 1989.
By the end of the 1980s, a number of companies had consolidated or left Hartford for less expensive places to do business, decreasing employment opportunities and leaving vacant office space. Originally two more, taller buildings were planned for the complex.
